Michelle Garfield Cook
Dr. Cook previously served as an associate dean in UGA's Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. She is an affiliate faculty member in the Institute for African American Studies and the Institute for Women’s Studies. She is also a member of the Foot Soldiers Project faculty. Dr. Cook was the inaugural dean of the Franklin Residential College and she was a 2008 faculty-in-residence at the UGA Oxford program in Oxford, England. Dr. Cook is co-principal investigator for the Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation.
She holds a bachelor's degree in history from Princeton, a master's in African-American Studies from Yale and a doctorate in history from Duke.
Angela Y. Birkes-Grier
Angela Y. Birkes-Grier joined the University of Georgia as the Alliance Director for the Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (Peach State LSAMP) in the Office of Institutional Diversity in August 2010. The Peach State LSAMP program is funded by the National Science Foundation. As the Alliance Director, she manages and oversees the Alliance-wide activities for the program. L Randolph Carter
Randolph joined the Office of Institutional Diversity in 2011. He manages initiatives focused on building the diversity competencies of faculty and staff, the creation of internal and external diversity partnerships, and the recruiting of diverse faculty and staff. Pittman joined the office in 2002. She is responsible for budget & fiscal affairs, grant management, and assisting with office programs & events. She earned her bachelor’s degree in electronic technology from Norfolk State University and a master’s degree in Information Technology from American Intercontinental University.
Shirley L. Reyes
Shirley joined the Office of Institutional Diversity in 2004 and has worked at UGA since 1994. She provides administrative support to the associate provost, assist in the day to day operations of the office, and assist with office programs and events.
Kelly Slaton has served as the Coordinator of Assessment & Diversity Initiatives since 2012. She is responsible for the assessment and evaluation of office programs, identifying and pursuing development opportunities to support campus diversity efforts, and other diversity initiatives as assigned. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in anthropology from the University of Georgia, a Master of Public Administration from Georgia State University, and is currently working toward a Doctorate in higher education at the University of Georgia.
Gabriel J Jiménez-Fuentes
Gabriel J. Jiménez-Fuentes joined the Office of Institutional Diversity in 2015. He is the Coordinator of Student Academic Success and Achievement, and is currently a PhD student in Caribbean Literature at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. He holds a Master’s degree in African Languages and Literature from the University of Wisconsin, Madison Campus and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus.
Vanessa Smith is the Coordinator of Programs and Outreach. She received a Masters of Education in student affairs administration at Indiana University-Bloomington. She is responsible for major programs and assists with undergraduate recruitment for the office.
Ellen Surrency provides administrative support to the Peach State Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (Peach State LSAMP). Working directly with the Alliance Director at UGA she also offers assistance to the six other member institutions of the alliance. She joined the Office of Institutional Diversity in 2012 and has been with UGA since 2007.
